Lighting Design

Tales of Hoffmann, MWO

We specialise in striking lighting using modest resources, and our rigs are especially suitable for touring and short fit-ups. We are equally at home with a full moving light rig, or 2 parcans on stands. We are also very used to adapting existing house rigs for one–off performances when there is little time or labour for rigging and focussing. We are strong believers in making the performers stand out from the background.

We have lit very many productions over the years, a few examples of which are The Tales of Hoffmann, La Bohème, The Bartered Bride, Carmen, and Rigoletto for Mid Wales Opera, Grey Seal Cut Stone and All At Sea for Theatr Powys, Orpheus in the Underworld for Opera Holland Park, A Midsummer Night's Dream for the London Symphony Orchestra, and Noises, Sounds and Sweet Airs for the Fano Festival, Italy. We are just as happy lighting amateur shows, e.g. Calamity Jane and Oliver! for Newtown Musical Theatre, and Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid for Ysgol Theatr Maldwyn.

For Mid Wales Opera, we use 40 to 50 channels maximum, little if any front of house, and the majority of circuits on the floor, which makes for quick rigging and focussing. For Theatr Powys community tours we used 24 channels maximum, in a self contained system. For A Midsummer Night's Dream, we used the full house rig at the Barbican, and for an Opera evening at Glansevern Hall, 6 channels.
